This is an introductory course which explains the basic rules and principles applied within the sport and doesn’t require any prior experience as a fighter or coach to attend.

People who complete the course and want to actively pursue becoming an official will be invited to attend additional training and development opportunities that run alongside our tournaments. This will mean people who complete the course on Saturday 22 June will be invited to attend our tournament at the AIS on Sunday 23 June (event details here) to ‘shadow’ our qualified officials and gain a practical understanding of what a referee and judge does.

Cost: This introductory course is free and if you subsequently decide to become a Boxing ACT member as an RJ Official, your membership cost will be covered by Boxing ACT.

Venue: Venue details will be confirmed to registered participants at least 24 hours in advance, however is most likely to be held at a venue in vicinity of Dairy Road, Fyshwick.

Course requirements: The course will start at 9am and finish by 1pm. Participants will need to bring a notebook and pen. Training will be delivered in an indoor, classroom environment. Comfortable sports or casual attire is encouraged to be worn.

FAQ

What if I'm only interested in judging and not refereeing? We would still encourage you to undertake this basic course as it will provide you an understanding of both types of officials, and part of being a good judge is understanding what the referee does and why. However, we understand refereeing isn't for everyone, and we certainly welcome those who only wish to judge. You will not be pressured to referee if you do not wish to do so.

What if I'm 16-18 years of age? This course is primarily aimed at adults who can assume the legal responsibilities associated with refereeing. However, we are able to accept junior/youth through our Junior Officiating program which is open to those who can demonstrate a strong desire to officiating. Please email the RJ director to discuss: rjdirector@boxingact.org.au

What if I've got prior refereeing experience or think I'm ready to referee/judge right now? If you have prior refereeing/judging experience (from another association, sport or country), it is still highly recommended that you still attend this course. Attending this course is the quickest way to beginning your “RJ” journey within Boxing ACT.

What if I'm a coach or fighter and just want to know more about scoring and the rules? This course is intended on providing a pathway for people who genuinely wish to participate in this sport as a qualified RJ. Coaches are always welcome to raise questions and queries through the Boxing ACT committee or the RJ co-ordinator at any time. Fighters should consider participation at state and national development camps as excellent opportunities to learn more about the technical rules and regulations.
